Phablets are the latest trend in the smartphone industry - thanks to Samsung which started the once-upon-a-time 'niche' category. After the success of the original Galaxy Note, many Indian manufacturers followed suit offering decent specs with larger screen sizes.

-Mobile USA managed to grab more customers last quarter, but that achievement didn't translate into higher revenue.
For the fourth quarter, the company saw a net gain of 61,000 customers, compared with a net loss of 526,000 customers a year earlier. The overall news, however, was mixed.
The number of prepaid customers grew for the sixth quarter in a row, with 166,000 additions last quarter. But the number of contract customers dropped by 515,000, compared with a drop of 492,000 in the fourth quarter of 2011.

SAP Shifts 5,000 Direct Accounts To Channel Partners
Unknown
No comments
SAP is transferring more than 5,000 customer accounts to its channel
partners and is reorienting its inside sales force to focus on working
with partners instead of selling to enterprise customers.
The moves are the latest steps in SAP's ongoing expansion of its channel operations, and the company may exceed its goal of logging 40 percent of its sales through the channel by 2015, said Kevin Gilroy, Senior Vice President, Global Indirect Channels, SAP in an interview.
SAP identified 5,000 customers around the world, which until now the company serviced directly, that would be better served by solution provider partners, Gilroy said. "And we are moving them quickly to the channel."
Those accounts are being matched up with partners based on geographical location, product expertise and vertical industry experience, Gilroy said. He said he expects the transfers to be completed by midyear.
SAP categorizes customers as enterprise—which it sells to directly—and general business, the latter small and midsize customers SAP relies on partners to service. SAP has been moving up the threshold between the two, growing the number of customer prospects channel partners can sell to. That's also the main driver behind the shift of the 5,000 customer accounts to channel partners.
SAP, which once focused on selling direct to large companies and had a minimal presence in the channel, has been steadily ramping up its sales through the channel in recent years. Gilroy said channel sales accounted for 34 percent of sales last year and is growing at twice the rate of the software vendor's direct sales.
SAP's top executives have set a goal of moving 40 percent of the company's sales through the channel by 2015, but Gilroy said he thinks the company will exceed that. SAP has doubled its channel sales in the past two years "and we will double that again in the next two years," he said.
Prior to last year, SAP's inside sales organization focused on driving transactional sales to enterprises. But the company has reoriented the organization to work 100 percent on assisting channel partners. That includes generating sales leads for the channel and helping partners cross-sell and upsell to existing customers, said Ann-Mari Doody, Senior Vice President, Global Inside Sales, in an interview.
"The majority of the focus will be on net-new business," she said.
Inside sales will particularly focus on generating channel sales for SAP's channel-friendly software products, such as its Business Objects business analytics products and Business All-in-One application suite, according to Doody. The inside sales organization also will work with partners to develop online solution demonstrations and workshops.
"Inside global sales is now a channel support machine," Gilroy said.
Doody declined to disclose the size of SAP's inside sales organization, other than to say the number of employees is in "the hundreds." The company is adding to those ranks, including creating a number of inside partner account managers to work with channel partners and SAP's field partner account managers.
SAP also plans to recruit 500 additional channel partners globally this year, Gilroy said. The company currently has more than 12,300 partners, including systems integrators and resellers, the latter accounting for about 3,000 of the total.
Gilroy said SAP's recent channel gains are "proof points" that the company's channel initiatives are paying off. "We are really trying to drive the channel DNA into the company."

Google Anxiety, Samsung’s Long Shadow And The Motorola Hedge
Unknown
No comments
Android got a late start compared to Apple’s iOS in the worldwide
smartphone battle, but it eventually grew to attain a larger worldwide
market share, and it did so largely on the back of a single champion:
Samsung. Samsung’s Galaxy line has become to Android what the iPhone is
to iOS, despite hardware and software coming from completely distinct
companies. But Google very specifically didn’t sign up to be a one horse
kind of cowboy, and as such it makes sense for the search giant to be
somewhat fearful of Samsung’s growing influence, as the WSJ reports.
Google’s hardware direction could change completely when Motorola’s current pipeline runs down.

Quite a few manufacturers have tried to cash-in on this feature by introducing cameras that approach prosumers as far as looks and features are concerned, while not going all out in terms of image quality for the sake of making it more affordable. Sony's 18.2 MP Cyber-shot DSC-HX200V is one such camera that packs in 30x optical zoom and BIONZ image processor. It is an upgrade over the HX100V, which had a 16.2 MP image sensor and could shoot up to ISO 3200, as against the HX200V's ISO 12800 with the Exmor R CMOS sensor. Let's find out how well this camera performs.

We never used to take the speakers in phones or tablets very
seriously. Frankly, we're not sure manufacturers did either. But the old
assumption that tiny = tinny is starting to seem a bit unfair. Last year, Dutch chip-maker NXP released a new type of mobile audio component -- the TFA9887
-- that allowed a mobile device to monitor its speaker system in
real-time in order to max out volume without risking damage to the
driver. Although NXP is way too modest to confirm it, we happen to know
that this chip made its way into a number of HTC devices, including the
new One, One X+ and 8X, where it's been described as "feedback" speaker technology.

above in the palm of your hand... sort of. The heart of the system is
either an iOS or Android app (sorry MeeGo
fans), but there are actual lasers with a custom enclosure as part of
the platform. Clearly, that does somewhat restrict portability, but it
should all fit into a 10-inch x 10-inch x 4-inch box for storage or

While smartphone specs and screens have gotten hungrier for power, battery capacity has not kept pace. No wonder then that 'power packs', or external battery based chargers came about, allowing you to charge your phone's battery using a charged external battery. Until recently, such external chargers, as they are unofficially referred to, were available from no name brands, but some biggies like Cooler Master and Sony have introduced their offerings. [The term 'external charger' is not exactly descriptive of the function of these devices, since all chargers are external to the device they charge. But in absence of a universally accepted name for this device, external (USB) charger appears to be an apt term].

LG teases several new smartphones for MWC, is brought to you by the letters G, L, V and F

LG isn't done making vague hints at what it's got in store for us in Barcelona next week.
While we admittedly missed it on our first viewing, the latest trailer
flies past several red initials and vague glimpses of four handsets.
There's an L (style?), a G (greatness), one V (view, or Vu) and a new one, F, that apparently stands for freedom. In short, it looks like LG might be bringing quite a few phones to the show. The
short video also places plenty of emphasis on tags, which we're
guessing will involve some NFC tech -- possibly expanding on those "Tag
On" stickers we saw announced at CES last month. We just wish the message was as loud and clear as the music in the teaser. You've been warned.

Marvell announces PXA1088 quad-core SoC for globetrotting phones and tablets
Unknown
No comments
Marvell made waves last year with its 802.11ac wireless chips, but the company's looking to make a splash in 2013 with a new quad-core ARM Cortex-A7 SoC. Called the PXA1088, the new silicon's calling card -- other than those four CPU cores -- is its ability to beam 3G data to mobile devices anywhere in the world thanks to auto-roaming and compatibility with 21Mbps HSPA+, TD-HSPA+, EDGE, and WCDMA networks. In addition to those cellular radios, it also has an Avastar 88W8777 chip that brings WiFi, Bluetooth 4.0 and FM radio, plus it has a GPS and GLONASS location processor on board.
Worldwide connectivity isn't the PXA1088's only trick, either. It's got some serious video chops thanks to a hardware 1080p encoder and decoder, and a GPU from Vivante compliant with OpenGL ES 2.0 and 1.1 as well as OpenVG 1.1. Can't wait to get your grubby mitts on a phone packing Marvell's latest? The company tells us that several well-known OEMs will be rolling out devices with the PXA1088 in the first half of the year. Of course, we're hoping to see a few of them ourselves next week at Mobile World Congress, so stay tuned.

digital computer.
