Google Ditches Oracle's MySQL for the Open Source MariaDB

Google is migrating to MariaDB
Enlarge picture   It's not making a big fuss about it, but Google is switching all of its MySQL servers over to MariaDB. The move is not purely symbolic, but it can't be ignored that MySQL now belongs to Oracle, a company with which the search giant doesn't have a great history.

MariaDB, on the other hand, is a pure open source project created precisely as a reaction to Oracle's increasing influence over MySQL. The fact that MariaDB is a MySQL fork makes migration easy, but not entirely painless.

Still, Google is very determined. In fact, it's already contributing to MariaDB, fixing and improving things so that the database software can handle the search giant’s requirements.

The company has been working on this since the beginning of the year, and its contributions are also making it easier for others to migrate from older MySQL databases.

"Google's MySQL team is in the process of moving internal users of MySQL at Google from MySQL 5.1 to MariaDB 10.0. Google's MySQL team and the SkySQL MariaDB team are looking forward to working together to advance the reliability and feature set of MariaDB," Google confirmed the switch.
